How to Read the Calendar

Each coloured dot beneath a date tells you the type of walk scheduled that day.

Our calendar uses three colour markers drawn from common trail-mapping conventions. A green dot marks short walks lasting under thirty minutes on mostly flat terrain — ideal for lunch breaks or a quick morning start before work. A yellow dot indicates medium walks between thirty and ninety minutes, often including moderate hills or mixed surfaces such as gravel paths in the Botanic Garden. An orange dot signals long walks exceeding ninety minutes, typically reserved for weekend adventures along coastal or bush trails.

When multiple walks occur on the same day, you may see two dots stacked vertically. The top dot represents the morning session and the bottom dot the evening session. Blank dates mean no organised group walk is scheduled, though members are always welcome to use our published route library for self-guided outings. We refresh the calendar every Sunday evening for the following two weeks.

If you are new to the club, start with green-dot days until you feel comfortable with the pace and meeting routines. Walk leaders carry printed route cards showing elevation profile, surface type, nearest bus stops, and suggested turnaround points for anyone who prefers a shorter option.

Route Categories Explained

Short Waterfront Loops

These routes stay on paved paths from Te Papa to Oriental Bay and back. Average distance is 1.5 to 2 km with no significant elevation. Perfect for newcomers testing the club atmosphere or fitting movement into a busy weekday schedule.

Medium Hill Routes

Expect 3 to 5 km with 80 to 150 metres of climbing through parks like Bolton Street Memorial or the outer Botanic Garden trails. Surfaces vary between sealed paths and compacted gravel. Allow fifty to seventy minutes at a conversational pace.

Long Coastal Adventures

Weekend routes such as Red Rocks or Makara Peak cover 8 to 12 km with uneven terrain and exposed sections. Sturdy footwear and a packed snack are recommended. Carpooling from Tory Street departs thirty minutes before the listed start time.

Special Themed Walks

Once or twice monthly we schedule photography walks, history tours through Old St Paul's precinct, or litter-pick community days. These appear on the calendar with a small leaf icon in the walk description table below.

Syncing Walks with Your Week

Planning around a visual calendar reduces the mental effort of deciding when to walk. When a walk is already scheduled in the diary, it is often easier to follow through than with a vague intention to "walk more this week." By glancing at our colour dots on Sunday evening, you can block time for the sessions that suit your schedule.

We suggest pairing green-dot mornings with days when you want a brisk start before meetings. Yellow-dot midweek walks work well for social connection during lunch hours. Orange-dot weekends suit members who want extended time in nature without rushing back to the city. If your schedule shifts, most walks have no formal sign-up — simply join the group at the listed meeting point.

Members who walk three or more times per week often alternate short and medium days, reserving long routes for restful weekends. Listen to your body and choose colours that match how you feel rather than pushing for the longest option every time.

Include approximate distance, surface type, and public transport access. Approved routes receive a colour classification and appear on the calendar within two weeks. Walk Safety Tips

Visibility on Shared Paths

Wear bright or reflective clothing on evening walks. Walk leaders carry a small light for group visibility in dim sections.

Basic First Aid Kit

Leaders carry plasters and antiseptic for minor blisters. For longer walks, pack any personal supplies you may need.

Traffic Awareness

Some routes cross roads without signals. Wait for the group leader before stepping off kerbs on busy streets.

Heat and Wind

Wellington wind can feel colder than the temperature suggests. Layer clothing and apply sun protection on clear days.

FAQs

Can I join only long walks?

Yes, though we suggest trying a medium walk first if you are unsure about hill fitness. Long walks include marked exit points for early return.

How often is the calendar updated?

Every Sunday for the next fourteen days. Weather cancellations are posted by 6:00 am on walk day.

What do the colour dots mean?

Green is short (under 30 min), yellow is medium (30–90 min), orange is long (90+ min). See the legend at the top of this page.
